Ganbare Goemon Wiki

Ganbare Goemon: Ebisumaru Kiki Ippatsu (がんばれゴエモンえびす丸危機一髪? lit.: "Go for it Goemon: Ebisumaru's Close Call") is an electronic LCD handheld game, part of the Ganbare Goemon series, developed and published by Konami. It was released on August 8, 1990, in Japan only.

In this game, Goemon has to rescue Ebisumaru who has been captured by evildoers.

Gameplay[]

The objective of the game is to take control of the chivalrous thief and ninja hero, Goemon, in his quest to rescue his longtime friend, Ebisumaru, who has been kidnapped by evildoers and kept chained to a platform.

The screen is divided in two sections: An Edo period town-like surface section, which uses the top-half of the screen, and an underground flooded sewer section, which uses the bottom-half part of the screen.

In the town section, Goemon will have to deal with several critters that will incessantly attack him, such as Monkeys, Crows and Crabs. To do this, Goemon counts with his trusty kiseru to defend himself from enemies coming from the left side of the screen, as well as a mighty open hand thrust to deal with enemies coming from the right. Crabs are invincible and must be jumped over instead. Goemon can move left and right along the field, and can also jump to evade oncoming Crabs and deal with airborne enemies.

10 points are given for each defeated enemy, and once the player has accumulated 100 points, the well that serves as entrance to the underground sewer section will open.

In the flooded sewer, Goemon will have to swim through and evade a spinning blade trap and a device producing electric bolts. Precise timing is required in order to make it past these two obstacles. On the right side of the screen lies a key at the bottom which unlocks Ebisumaru's chain. Goemon must acquire this key and then retrace his steps through the water and the town sections, and then use it on Ebisumaru's chain to finally set his ninja friend free.

Once Game 1 has been completed, the game will switch to Game 2. In Game 2, enemies are faster and a few new gameplay mechanics are implemented: Ebisumaru will now be held inside a reinforced glass cage and the player will have to find and make use of a Bomb in order to shatter it. Additionally, Goemon will only be able to hold his breath and remain underwater for only up to ten seconds while in the sewer section. And lastly, the key will now be hidden inside one of three boxes, and choosing the wrong one will force Goemon to make another trip back. On the bottom of the sewer section now lies a bomb, which Goemon must collect and bring to the cage to shatter it. Once this has been accomplished, either another bomb or the key will appear in the sewer section, and Goemon will have to make another trip to pick it up and bring it to the cage. The number of bombs required to shatter the glass cage is random for each loop, and the player must keep collecting and using them until the key finally appears.

Once Game 2 has been completed, the game will switch to Game 3, which once again ups the difficulty of the game by increasing the enemies' speed.
