Ganbare Goemon: Uchū Kaizoku Akogingu (がんばれゴエモン 〜宇宙海賊アコギング〜? lit: "Go for it Goemon: Space Pirate Akogingu") is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Konami for the PlayStation, released on March 22, 1996 in Japan. It is part of the Ganbare Goemon series.

Plot[]

The story begins in outer space, with a spaceship being attacked by the ruthless pirate space clown Akogingu. Not being able to hold on anymore, the ship crashes into Edo.

Hearing the turmoil, Goemon and Ebisumaru decide to go to investigate. A green-haired strongman named Goroku joins them along the way. They find out the spaceship belongs to a funky glasses-wearing alien named Baban. He tells them his story and asks them for help. The team agrees and get his ship repaired in order to fight against the invaders.

Development and gameplay[]

Gameplay is rather similar to Ganbare Goemon 3, as there is a main map in a top-down perspective, which leads to various 2D side-scrolling levels. Being that it is the first Ganbare Goemon title released for the PlayStation, it experimented with graphics such as showing inward depth during the overhead map portions.

The soundtrack contains both new tracks and remixes of older tracks from previous entries in the series, which were handled by Akira Yamaoka, Michiru Yamane, Takayuki Fujii, Motoaki Furukawa, Tappi Iwase, "Latino", Hiroshi Tamawari, and Shoichiro Hirata.

This was the first Goemon game since Sasuke and Yae's appearance as playable characters which didn't include either on the playable roster. Instead, they were replaced by the new characters Goroku and Baban. Even though Sasuke and Yae return as playable characters in most future games, Goroku and Baban are never seen, mentioned, or heard from again after this game; it is unknown the reason why, although it is assumed that many fans were upset over Sasuke and Yae being replaced.
