Goemon's Great Adventure (がんばれゴエモン~でろでろ道中 オバケてんこ盛り~ Ganbare Goemon: Derodero Dōchū Obake Tenko Mori?), known in Europe as Mystical Ninja 2 Starring Goemon, is the fourth and last Ganbare Goemon game to be released in North America, and the second for the Nintendo 64. In Japan, it was released on December 23, 1998, in North America on September 22, 1999, and in Europe on June 18, 1999.
Plot[]
The Wise Old Man invites Goemon and Ebisumaru to see his new invention, the "Super Gorgeous Ghost Machine", which can revive the dead. He intends to use it to revive dead celebrities. However, before he can use it, Bismaru steals the machine in order to use it to revive and marry Dochuki, Master of the Underworld, and conquer Edo together. Goemon and Ebisumaru chase after Bismaru to retrieve the machine and stop her from carrying out her evil plans.
Gameplay[]
Goemon's Great Adventure is a side scrolling platformer. The gameplay more closely resembles that of the Ganbare Goemon series' Super Famicom entries, and abandons the free-roaming style of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. Although movement is restricted along a two-dimensional plane, the stages are rendered in three dimensions, earning the game a 2.5D status.
The game begins on a world map upon which several circles are placed indicating stages. Players must complete certain stages to open up paths to others, and each world map generally features one town and one castle. When beating a castle, you'll unlock a new world map. To enter a castle, you must collect a certain amount of Entry Passes, which is the main item to get in the game, able to get them in both levels and side quests.
In the levels, you have to reach to the end of the stage. At the end, there is a giant Tanuki statue, which you'll have to break to complete the level. If you beat the level for the first time, you'll get an Entry Pass, if not the statue will just spit out a bunch of coins. Some levels may have secret paths, which means some levels may have more than one Entry Pass.
When entering a town, the game changes to a 3D format. In the towns, you can buy different items, such as armor to get extra hit points, food to restore life points or sushi to regenerate life points if you die. In the towns you can also complete side quests that will give you Entry Passes if you beat them. The towns are also the way to save a game when signing a journal. You can also buy a room to sleep and automatically set the clock in daytime.
Goemon's Great Adventure features a system of day and night. Every two to three minutes, a meter in the information bar will slowly turn to evening or morning; the sky in a stage's background will similarly emulate the hues of a sunset or a sunrise. At day, there will be normal enemies that will give you either a coin, a dumpling, which recovers one hit point, or a cat doll, which will upgrade your weapon. At night, more powerful and swift enemies challenge players. However, they produce two coins rather than one when killed.
All characters function similarly. All of them have 3 hit points, a melee weapon, a long range weapon (Which can be charged, but will take 3 coins to charge them) and a special ability. When collecting cat dolls, their weapons will get upgraded and will have longer range. The long range takes coins from the players' count and enemies killed by these type of weapon don't give out coins or items. However, they are all unique in their playstyle:
Goemon: He uses his iconic pipe as his melee weapon. When upgraded, his pipe will either turn silver and gold, which will have both longer range and deal more damage. He throws coins as his long range weapon and launches a fireball as his charged attack. His special ability is the chain pipe, an upgrade he gets in Lost'n Town after paying 100 coins to a man named Kenzo. The chain pipe has longer range than the normal Pipe, and can also break star blocks (Being the only character that can do so). However, killing an enemy with the chain pipe won't give out coins or items. Goemon is also the only character that can double jump.
Ebisumaru: He uses a wooden paddle as his melee weapon, which will turn into a decorative paddle when upgrading it. He throws shurikens as his long range weapon. As his charged move he farts, which the cloud will kill enemies (In the American version, he burps instead of farting). His special ability is a megaphone which he obtains in Otohime Town when talking to girl who says Ebisumaru is his special one. With it, Ebisumaru can create stone made words, which he can use both as an attack method and as platforms to reach higher places other characters can't. He can also jump higher when jumping and pressing down, making him do a butt slam jump.
Sasuke: He is unlocked in Lost'n Town. He uses a Kunai as his melee weapon. When upgraded, his Kunai will turn silver and then gold. When his Kunai is gold, he can throw kunais with the attack button. He can also use his spiky hair as an attack when crouching or looking up. He throws bombs as his long range weapon, and will throw giant bombs as his charged attack, which he can use to destroy cracked blocks (The only character that can do so). As his special ability, he is one of two characters that can swim underwater. Underwater he may only use his kunai for attacking, but he moves with more precision. He is also the fastest character in the game.
Yae: She is unlocked in Otohime Town. She uses a Katana as her melee weapon, which will turn silver and then gold when upgraded. Her long range weapon is a Bazooka. When charged, her bazooka will target three enemies, even if they aren't in front of her. As her special ability she is one of two characters that can swim underwater. When underwater, Yae will turn into a mermaid. As a mermaid, she is much faster than Sasuke underwater, and she may use either her Bazooka or a special slam attack as her attack methods. Underwater, she can use her bazooka indefinitely. However, she is much more difficult to control than Sasuke underwater.
When completing a castle, you will enter a special boss fight, in which you will control both Goemon Impact and Miss Impact and fight a giant mecha boss. As Impact, you can throw fast jabs with their left arm, strong punches with their right arm, shoot projectiles out their noses (Which wastes coins) and also throw a baton to tag with the other Impact, as well as blocking to reduce damage. Impact can also do special moves, such as a kick, a combo of fast punches, and unleash a giant laser beam, which is the strongest move Impact has. Impact can collect coins by destroying enemy projectiles. To defeat the enemy mecha, you will have to reduce their health points to zero.
