Hiroshi Obi (帯ひろ志 Obi Hiroshi?) (born September 16, 1959–died August 3, 2014) was a Japanese manga artist (mangaka). He was the creator of most manga publications based on Konami's popular Ganbare Goemon series, all published by Kodansha.
Biography and career[]
Native of Obihiro City in Hokkaido, Japan, raised in the Kanagawa Prefecture, graduating from the Manga Department of the Japan Designer Gakuin in 1978, and later moving to Niiza City, Saitama Prefecture in 1980, Hiroshi Obi started his career as mangaka in 1982 with the premiere of the Hoshi no Ōji-sama manga in a special issue of the monthly magazine Shōnen Jump. In 1991, he began working on the manga adaptations of Konami's popular Japanese video game series Ganbare Goemon (known in the west as Mystical Ninja).
On August 31, 2007, Mr. Obi was hospitalized due to a cerebral infarction and was subsequently diagnosed with diabetes. He was discharged on September 8. Although there were some aftereffects, such as reduced work efficiency due to hypoglycemia, there was no major damage to his dominant arm and he continued working vigorously afterward.
He was appointed Manga Department Lecturer of the Tokyo Kogakuin College of Technology in 2007, Public Relations of the Japan Manga Association from October 2008, Advisor from the Hokkaido Manga Study Group from February 2009, and Kodansha's Manga Course Instructor from September 2010. Since 2013, he had also been in charge as manga course instructor at Chuo Art School. He also served as a manga character design teacher at the Nakano Manga School.
Mr. Obi had recently been working on a remake of the Yatterman manga, titled Yatterman Dengeki Daisakusen!, as well as a new edition of the Ganbare Goemon: Yukihime Kyūshutsu Emaki manga.
On the evening of August 2, 2014, he suddenly developed a brain stem hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery; however, he died the next morning, on August 3, at 54 years old.
