For the enemy carrying a fish in his arms, see Fishmonger (The Legend of the Mystical Ninja).

The Fishmonger is a recurring enemy in the Ganbare Goemon series. He is a diligent fish merchant who carries a wooden pole holding two buckets filled with fish and water.

Description[]

A diligent fish merchant who runs through the village carrying a long wooden pole over his shoulder that holds two buckets full of fish and water, one on each end. This working tool gives him a longer reach than most other common town enemies, but other than that, he doesn't differ much more from them.

Appearances[]

The Legend of the Mystical Ninja[]

Fishmongers only make a very brief appearance in the entire game - along the exit bridge of the Otafuku Army's mechanical amusement park; and even then, only one or two of them are usually encountered. Additionally, they only appear in the area preceding Big Octo, and once past this boss, they aren't encountered again for the remaining of the bridge.

Unlike most other incarnations of this enemy in the series, where he is generally seen from a side view, in this game, this longshoreman is now seen from a top view perspective, running downward along the bridge. After a while of running with such a heavy load, he'll stop for a moment to take a brief break; when he does this, he'll place the pole he's carrying in a horizontal position, which can take the player by surprise if they are trying to move beside him.

Trivia[]

  • Another enemy also called Sakanaya (魚屋) in Japanese (localized as The Carp Meister in English) appears in The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, making this game to feature two different enemies under the same name, although retaining the same concept of both being fish merchants. This other variant carries a fish in his arms instead of the classic design of a man carrying a wooden pole with two buckets of water.
